In 1942, the Presidio County 4-H clubs sponsored a scrap metal drive to support the war effort. The clubs were able to collect over 4,000 pounds of metal and steel which was shipped by rail to a company in Ohio. The club members purchased Defense Bonds with the proceeds. The scrap yard was located on West Oak Street where the Chamberlain Building is now located
